More than 150 women attended the Women’s Heart and Stroke Conference on August 18 to learn more about heart disease - the #1 killer of women in the U.S. The event was presented by Spalding Regional Medical Center and the American Heart Association.

In his opening remarks, Spalding Regional CEO John Quinn commended the women for attending and taking charge of their health. “If you even reduce one risk, you can greatly lower your chances of becoming a victim to these diseases. Our goal today is to provide education and empower you to reduce your risk.”

Local physicians covered specific topics, such as diabetes, hormones and healthy eating, in breakout sessions. In addition, free health screenings were offered at the event.

Alex Durkee introduces the two survivors, Robin Starr and Marilyn English. Since one in three women will lose their battle with heart disease, the third chair (on left) remains empty to represent the women who did not survive.

The event concluded with a survivor luncheon hosted by Miss South Carolina Teen America Alex Durkee. Alex spoke of her personal experience when a close family member had a stroke. In addition, two women who had survived heart disease told their story to inspire the group. One of the survivors had said she ignored the initial symptoms. Through her message, she hoped to empower the attendees to listen to their body and react quickly if they experience the warning signs.
