Griffin, GA – December 9, 2010. Spalding Regional Medical Center has been awarded the 3 Year Accreditation with Commendation from the Commission on Cancer for its Medical Oncology Department. The Commission on Cancer conducted an evaluation of performance through an on-site survey in December of 2009 and awarded the accreditation in November of 2010. Institutions involved in the Accreditation Program represent a broad-based network of comprehensive cancer programs that offer the entire spectrum of cancer control activities, from prevention to rehabilitation and long term follow-up.
The Commission on Cancer, established by the American College of Surgeons, is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive quality care. The CoC establishes standards to ensure quality and comprehensive cancer care delivery in health care settings and conducts surveys in health care settings to assess compliance with those standards.
Cynthia Flemister, RN, Director of Medical Oncology and Cancer Conference Quality Coordinator and Amanda Foster, RN, Cancer Conference Coordinator led a Cancer Committee team from Spalding Regional in their diligent efforts towards this accreditation. “We’re proud to have achieved this commendation,” stated Ms. Flemister. “It demonstrates our commitment to provide a high level of cancer care, from diagnosis and treatment through to rehabilitation and support.” Among the reasons given for Spalding Regional’s Commendation was a very active outreach program, which impacts prevention and early detection.
Ms. Foster agrees, “This accreditation will help to assure our community that they are receiving some of the highest quality cancer care available in the region.” Spalding Regional was one of only 14 Community Hospitals out of 37 in the state of Georgia, and one of only 680 nationwide (out of 1,388) to receive this honor.
