On November 1, 2007, Spalding Regional Medical Center will become a tobacco-free campus. Spalding Regional will join hospitals throughout the U.S. who have already implemented similar policies. The policy enforces Spalding Regional’s commitment to providing a healthy environment for its patients, employees and visitors.
Tobacco-free campus means that smoking and the use of tobacco products will be prohibited in all Spalding Regional buildings as well as outdoor areas, including parking lots, entrances and sidewalks. The policy includes all properties owned and operated by the hospital and applies to all patients, visitors, employees and physicians.
The launch coordinates with the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout, which challenges people to stop using tobacco products and bring awareness to how to effectively quit. Tobacco use can cause diseases such as cancer, lung disease, heart disease, stroke and more. Secondhand smoke also is linked to cancer and heart disease, and according to the U.S. Surgeon General, “there is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke.”
Spalding Regional publicly announced plans to become a tobacco-free campus in July 2007. Since that time, the facility assembled a task force of tobacco users and non-tobacco users to help implement the policy, develop ways to assist employees and create guidelines to assist patients who are tobacco users during their hospital stay. Patients who smoke or use tobacco products are encouraged to speak with their physician about nicotine replacement options prior to being admitted to the hospital.
In addition, Spalding Regional now offers FreshStart, the American Cancer Society’s smoking cessation program, for employees and the community who want to quit. The program is free, but requires advance registration. To sign up for the class, call (770) 467-6136.
