Experts, Local Physicians and Miss South Carolina Teen America to Speak at Women’s Heart and Stroke Conference

August 9, 2007

On Saturday, August 18, Spalding Regional Medical Center and the American Heart Association will host the Women’s Heart and Stroke Conference at Griffin Technical College.

Nearly 150 women have already signed up for the free, half-day event, which aims to educate women on their risk for heart disease and stroke, and inspire them to take charge of their health. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the number one killer of women. In fact, more women will die from heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular disease than from breast cancer.

Dr. Madalyn Davidoff, a cardiologist from Macon and volunteer for the American Heart Association, will give the keynote address. Prior to joining a practice in Macon, Dr. Davidoff was a cardiology instructor at the Emory University School of Medicine. She is very dedicated to the American Heart Association and its mission.

Local physicians and experts will host breakout sessions on prevention and risk factors. The breakout session and speakers include:

  • Navigating the Meno Maze, Heather Henry, MD, Internal Medicine
  • Women and Heart Disease, Brian Remington, MD, Cardiologist
  • Healthy Eating in a Fast-paced World, Chef Ashlie Greene, Griffin Tech
  • Hormone Replacement Therapy, What Your Haven’t Heard, Michael Lynch, MD, OB/GYN
  • ABCs of Diabetes, Susan Hill, CDE, Spalding Regional Medical Center
  • Osteoporosis, The Silent Killer, Bruce Reid, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon

During lunch, attendees will hear from women who have survived a heart attack or stroke and Miss South Carolina Teen America, Alexandra Durkee. Alex is a youth ambassador for the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, and actively involved in fundraising and education activities for the organization. Stroke awareness and prevention is personal for Alex, who had a close family member suffer from a stroke.

The Women’s Heart and Stroke Conference also includes free cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure screenings, as well as an exhibitor area.

Registration is required and limited space is still available for the conference. If you would like to attend, please call (770) 467-6136 to register. For more information on the conference, please visit www.spaldingregional.com.
